Summer Music Institute Information
The summer will be here before we know it and everyone at the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music is more excited than ever about our fourth year of the Summer Music Institute! The first years were quite a success and we have made improvements to make this year even better.
Below are links to several documents that are very important pertaining to Institute participation. The link titled “Institute Information” should answer any remaining questions you may have regarding arrival times, location, and what to bring to camp.
In addition to this form and the application, three very important documents are also included in the links below. Parents and students should read the (1)“General Policies” statement to make certain that both parents and students understand the rules, regulations, and expectations of the UGA Summer Music Institute. Parents or guardians should also carefully read and sign the (2)“Consent and Release” form as the (3)“University Heath Center Form”. Please return both the “Consent and Release” and the “Health Form” along with your remaining balance as soon as possible.
We are looking forward to a great week at the 2012 Summer Music Institute!
Directly below, you will find answers to some common questions. This information is also in the "Information Letter" linked at the bottom of the page along with what to bring camp and directions.
Where do I go for Registration?
Registration will be held on Sunday June 3 from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. EDT at the
East Campus Parking Deck on the UGA Campus. Residence halls where the
Summer Music Camp students will be housed are located near this deck.
At registration, the following will take place:
• You will turn in your Consent and Health Forms if you have not done so.
• You will receive your schedule for the week, meal band, room assignment, and
T-shirt.
• You may add a private lesson if you have not already done so.
• Dorm Students will pay their $45 key deposit and receive their room key.
Will I need to audition?
Even if you are accepted into the Institute, you will still need to go through a placement audition when you come to camp. (Parents are responsible for taking students to the School of Music for their audition. After students are dropped off at the School of Music, we will have a van to take them back over to the dorms.) The audition requirements are below:

• As many major scales as possible
• Chromatic Scale
• A brief etude, solo, excerpt, or exercise
• Sight-Reading

• Pianists must also bring new music and their piano books to work on during the
week of camp.
Housing
The Summer Music Camp students will be housed in one of the three high-rise dorms on the west side of campus. The dorms are air-conditioned, with two beds per room and community restrooms with showers and toilet stalls. Snack, drink, and ice machines are in the residence hall lobby, as well as pay phones, a television, and an ATM.
Each room contains a telephone which may be used locally free of charge. Long distance calling requires a calling card. Cell phones are allowed during the week of camp, but are expected to be off during all classes and rehearsals.
As mentioned above, sheets are not provided by the residence hall. It is recommended that campers bring plenty of sheets (extra long), blankets, and a pillow due to the possibility of the room becoming rather cool at night. More information and more pictures of the dorms can be found at www.uga.edu/housing.
What about Food?
All students will eat lunch and dinner at the award-winning dining halls. This isn’t your typical
“cafeteria food.” UGA has one of the most honored and awarded Food Services programs of any
institution in the country. There will be a wide variety of food, including a great selection for those
with special dietary concerns. All meals at the dining halls include unlimited seconds.
What will the Daily Schedule be like?
All students will be in classes, rehearsals, or other activities from 8:00 AM – 9:30 PM each day at the School of Music.
Lunch is served at noon with dinner at 5:30 PM. You will receive a more detailed schedule when
you arrive for registration.
There will be some free time for most campers in the afternoons. The Creswell Hall tennis courts are
available for your use as well as supervised swimming that will be held at Legion Pool. Campers
may also use this time to rest. Day Campers should arrive each morning at the Performing Arts
Center at 7:45 AM and may depart campus daily at 9:45 PM from the same place.
Each evening students will participate in a special activity including a Faculty Recital, Staff Recital,
Camp Dance, and Honors Recital .
How do we get around?
Transportation is provided by the UGA Campus Transit system, a very clean and safe bus system.
The UGA Summer Music Camp will arrange for bus transportation to and from all locations on
campus and will be assisted and accompanied by Camp Staff when riding the bus.
It will be necessary to walk to lunch each day. The walk is pleasant and safe and takes about 7
minutes from the School of Music. Though the walk is rather modest, campers are advised to wear
athletic shoes to daily activities and bring an umbrella in case of rain.
What about the last day?
Concerts will be held on Thursday afternoon. You won't know your exact
Thursday schedule until after auditions.
Parents and their students should remain in contact throughout the week regarding what time to meet
for dorm checkout. Student's performing earlier concerts / recitals will check out sooner, while
student's who perform later will check out in the afternoon.
